"Fat" Acceptance: On the Rise or Not?

Woman Within Easy Update Banner

So, you've probably seen, read and heard about it everywhere;  "Plus Size" is the topic du jour.

In August, PETA ("People for the ETHICAL Treatment of Animals") ran billboard advertising with an overweight woman at the beach with the slogan "Save The Whales.  Loose the Blubber.  Go Vegetarian." causing a huge uproar.  So much for ethical!

In September, Canadian designer Mark Fast decided to bring in 3 plus size models for his fashion show in London last month, causing enough stir in his team that his stylist and casting director both ditched him the day before the show.  These models, who wear sizes 12-14, were in addition to the normal, waif-thin girls who were also in the show.

This caused a huge publicity stream for Mark Fast, which may or may not be the chief reason for him deciding to book these models.  He says he wanted to show that normal women can look good in his clothes, too.

The fashion magazine Glamour had plus model Lizzi Miller in her underwear in the September issue.  The magazine got such great reviews that they put 10 naked plus size models on the cover of their November magazine.

Which brings up the question how do YOU feel about seeing size 12-14 models as "plus size models" and how do you feel about bigger bodied gals being put in fashion shows and on mainstream magazine covers.  Do you think this is just a fad that will quickly fade with the next new Kate Moss?  Do you embrace this trend?

I think a lot of women have forgotten that almost ALL other women out there have non-perfect, non-airbrushed bodies with glorious curves, lines and yes--even SAGS.  Heck, do you even know what a real woman's body looks like anymore, considering that size 0-2 bodies are all we are inundated with?

Discuss.  :)

Stomach area

I have lost some weight but my stomach still stick out. What is the best way to dress my stomach up so it will not look so bad???

I like to use long

I like to use long cardigan-type sweaters or wraps to lengthen the middle.   Have a low-slung belt around the hip bones (also contains a bit of belly!), that with the long sweater / cardigan whatever gives you a waist and really makes you look trim. Make sure you stay away from tight, tailored type blouses, t-shirts that are too small or too short and jeans that fit too tight in the waist.

I also would never want to leave the house without my shapewear, I feel totally naked without it anymore!

"Fat" Acceptance

Excellent article. I think it best to reply in two ways firstly to the question : Which brings up the question how do YOU feel about seeing size 12-14 models as "plus size models" ? One needs to define the word model ? On checking the dictionary.com the 'model' definiton never describes the shape or size. The first definiton is : 'a standard or example for imitation or comparison.' If that is true, who defines the 'standard' for which fashion models grace our catwalks. Is this someone invisible ? Do they not live in the real world ? Obviously not ! Our bodies are many shapes and sizes. The sooner the fashion world embraces the FACT that 'size' does not define the word 'model' the sooner we'll see all sizes and shapes modelling clothes at the fashion shows. Afterall the industry is about sales. If we see more of these clothes on different sized models the fashion world may realise that the mass market might buy into these items in a way not ever seen before and in time accept that it's not the shape that makes the clothes what the are but the model and person who wears them. Secondly the world would be a very boring place is everyone looked identical. I like seeing men and women in different clothes. I love to see the curves, the colours, the patterns being different. Its not just the shape that is attractive but the way in which the body and the clothing is 'shown off'. When shopping do we all buy exactly the same clothes ? No. Why not ? Because we all have different tastes. What works/suits one may not suit me or you. In that ideal, its right to be different. Trying to be someone else is not the answer. Clothing, fashion, body shape is all about what YOU want to be not what THEY tell us to be. So yes I embrace the trend but why should be a 'trend'. Lets make it the 'Norm' !!

Fat Acceptance on the rise - or not?

It is my optimistic hope that fat acceptance IS on the rise, but not so much with what the media and fashion industry labels as 'plus size'. This is a start with Glamour magazine and with Mark Fast, but we need to know that 'bigger' and better things are near. Sizes 12-14 are the average women's sizes - let's talk about true plus size women in sizes 16+. Don't they realize that their sales would skyrocket if they didn't limit themselves to the barriers of size at all? Who dictates that fashion stops at a particular size anyway? Thanks for this post and I can see more and more the need for awareness and proactiveness with size acceptance. I happily created a forum just for plus size women - Plus Figured. You can find it at http://www.plusfigured.com.
